What is VISION?
VISION is meant as an opportunity not only for high school students to gain the necessary tools to harness their leadership potential, but it is also a chance for mentors to grow as facilitators and instill change within motivated youths. Each year, VISION hosts a theme.
VISION recognizes and understands the significance of the historical, cultural and contemporary issues the Vietnamese and Vietnamese American communities face. VISION aims to foster and encourage high school students to take away what they learn and gain from our program to become leaders of their own communities. Fundamentally, VISION empowers students to embrace their individual identities as well as the heritage of the Vietnamese culture.
Even though VISION is operated by the Vietnamese Student Association at UC Berkeley, students do not need to be of Vietnamese descent to apply! All students are encouraged to apply. This is open to students from 9-12th grade regardless of race, gender, background, GPA and socioeconomic status. Applicants will be chosen based on their interest and enthusiasm as well as their potential to grow as leaders. To determine whether an applicant fulfills these criteria, we will take into consideration only the quality of their personal statements.
Who can apply?
The theme for VISION 2019 is Valiance. Since 2012, VISION has had the pleasure of hosting high school students and university students from communities all over California on UC Berkeley’s campus for a 4-day, 3-night mentorship program, where we hope to foster an environment of growth, self-discovery, and long-lasting friendships. This year being Cal VSA’s 40th annual Culture Show, we have decided to align our theme with that of this year’s show. That being said, VISION 2019’s theme is Valiance. By participating in our program, we hope that our mentees, mentors, and volunteers, alike, develop the courage to chase their dreams fearlessly; to be their true, authentic selves; and finally, to act and lead their communities with valiance.
